Production issues make show unwatchable.
We had purchased 6th row orchestra seats to this production as a birthday gift for my daughter. We have never, in my life, walked out of a theatre production. Even after paying $50 a ticket, we left this show at intermission.
The production level of this show was worse than some of the local high-schools. When we arrived, we could hear them hammering behind the curtain. First off, the production started 42 minutes late, making for a long night/afternoon for an extremely long show.
The mics cut in and out, and even when they were working, the sound quality was so bad you could not understand the dialogue or the songs. The sets were cheap and looked as though they were about to fall over. The actors were often singing in complete darkness, and the lighting was inconsistent overall. I spent the whole time leaning over to let my husband (who hasn't read the book) know what was going on.
There were some incredible voices in the production and many obviously talented dancers giving their all, but they were wasted under this direction. The story was not strong, and there was no emotional connection to the characters or the story. I was really bored, and the thought of staying for the 2nd half was unbearable.
It's a shame that my daughter's birthday gift was so unenjoyable.
